| 内容記述 | Ballad tradition is not a cultural and literary heritage of the past. Ballad singers and poets developed their themes and forms of expression through reflecting upon : their daily lives, places they have lived, and social changes they have encountered. This paper focuses on two popular modern ballads, William Plomerʼs “The Murder on the Downs” and John Betjemanʼs “A Subalternʼs Love-song”. It discusses Plomerʼs description of contemporary absurdity, and Betjemanʼs creation of irony in the sketch of the typical middle-class life. Both of these ballads are recognized as modern broadside, which is the reason why they have gained wide popularity. |
